There were tense scenes in Stoneybatter last night outside the gates of Aughrim St Sports Centre which is set to accommodate asylum seekers.

Labour Councillor Joe Costello, who lives nearby, attempted to address the crowd. He told them only Ukrainians were to be housed there but the crowd were dismissive of his remarks and took back the microphone.

One mother said she had been on the housing list for 20 years and was recently taken off it for reasons that weren't clear. Her voice cracked as she spoke of her disappointment in the system — "What about my family???"

Another Irish mother said she has a child with one kidney which requires a catheterisation procedure five times daily. She is currently homeless.

Dublin taxi driver Gavin Pepper told the crowd that he intends to run in the next election.

"They call me Gavin Pepper — the man for the mams & prams...there's more of us than there is of them. Don't ever forget that."
