Born Micheal Joseph O’Rahilly he was known as The O’Rahilly because it is said he was the leader of his Clan. He was a devout Irish Nationalist and a founding member of the Irish volunteers.
He fought at the GPO during the Easter Rising. When the time came to retreat from the GPO he volunteered to lead a charge on a British machine gun post that had been blocking troops from retreating from they’re position. During the charge he was riddled with bullets from his shoulder to his hip by machine gun fire he clung on to life for a while but died from his injuries hours later.
