I have been speaking to a petroleum engineer about oil wells filling up years after they were abandoned as empty. This is what he told me: if the oil reservoir is emptied yet the source rock is near and has a pathway to the oil reservoir then the oil can fill up again!

So I asked him: Are you telling me that the source rock creates oil? He surprisingly said: “Yes!!”
