In 1959, in a cave in northern Greece, a human skull was found embedded in a wall, which was called the Petralon Archanthropus. The skull was determined to be 700,000 years old and is believed to be the oldest of the Caucasoid human remains.

The surprise came when the DNA of the archanthropus was examined. It was found to have evolved in Europe separately and had no connection to the African descendants.
