King Diarmait mac Murċada of Leinster inspects the head of a fallen enemy after the Battle of Aċaḋ Úr; year AD 1169. 🇮🇪 In the background, an Anglo-Norman mercenary (on horseback) and a Welsh mercenary. Art by Angus McBride (RIP: 1931-2007).
It was Diarmait mac Murċada who brought the first English invaders over to Ireland in the year 1169, in order to recover his Kingdom of Leinster. Diarmait had been ousted by the High King of Ireland, Ruaidrí Ua Conċobar and his ally, the king of Bréifne, Tigernán Ua Ruairc; he had taken the latter’s wife in a manner similar to the Greek legend of Paris and Helen of Troy. The English invasion was initially successful in restoring Diarmait to his throne and capturing a significant part of Ireland. The native Irish were unaccustomed to the novel fighting methods of the Normans (i.e. massed volleys by Welsh archers followed by cavalry charges with heavy war horses), and the aforementioned kings and enemies of Diarmait were highly incompetent. @eireisfalling
The fenian Brotherhood in gaelic " bráiṫreaċas na ḃfinini " was an Irish republican organisation founded in the US in 1858 by john o'mahony and michael doheny. it was a precursor to cian na gael, a sister organisation to the Irish republican brotherhood (IRB). The term, the brits loved to use for the irish during our troubles " fenians" were its name for its members. o' mahony was a gaelic scholar and he named the organisation, after the legendary band of irish warrors called " na fianna" led by fionn mac cumhaill. John Mitchel, the most committed advocate of revolution, had been arrested early in 1848 and transported to Australia on the expressly created charge of Treason-felony. He was later joined by other leaders, such as William Smith O'Brien and Thomas Francis Meagher who had both been arrested after Ballingary escaped to France, as did three of the younger members, James Stephens, John O'Mahony and Michael Doheny. @eireisfalling
