The field form reveals how electromagnetic fields create forces on charged particles. Lorentz force is the bridge connecting field theory to particle dynamics.

On this day in 1623 Blaise Pascal was born.

At nineteen he built a machine of brass gears that could add and subtract by turning dials. It was one of the first mechanical calculators ever made. He went on to invent the theory of probability in a series of letters with a lawyer named Pierre de Fermat, working out how to fairly divide the stakes of a game of chance that had been stopped partway through.

He proved that air has weight, left behind a book of devastating aphorisms, and died at thirty-nine. The unit of pressure is named for him and so is a programming language.

This exponential equation governs reaction rates and temperature dependenceโ€”tiny changes in temperature cause huge changes in reaction speed. Understanding it is key to chemistry, catalysis, and industrial processes.

The reason why the shape of a lot of pianos looks like an exponential is because for waves on a string, doubling length means reducing a music pitch by an octave (2x the frequency).

F = -kx: Force on a spring is proportional to displacement! Hooke's law explains elastic behavior of springs, rubber bands, and materialsโ€”fundamental to mechanical engineering and physics.
