The colors we observe here are the result of a well-defined atomic process. Each noble gas has its own distinct atomic structure and electron configuration, which limits electrons to specific energy levels.
When an electric current is applied, it transfers energy to the electrons, causing them to move up to higher, unstable energy states. This condition is temporary, so the electrons soon return to their original, lower energy levels.
During this return, the excess energy is released in the form of light. Since the spacing between energy levels is different for each element, the emitted light also differs in character.
As a result, every gas produces its own unique light signature, visible as a specific and identifiable color.
