Before Handwashing Was Normalised... What Happened?โœ‹๐Ÿงผ

In the 1840s, mothers in European hospitals were dying after childbirth at alarming rates.

Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis noticed something others didn't. The wards staffed by doctors had far higher deaths than the wards staffed by midwives.

Doctors performed autopsies and then they delivered babies.
So, He introduced a rule, that doctors have to wash their hands with a chlorinated solution before touching patients.

Deaths dropped from nearly 18 percent to about 1 percent when his rule was observed.
But, the medical community rejected him. His findings implied that doctors were responsible for the deaths of mothers.

He was later placed in an asylum for his belief and He died from infection (sepsis).

Today, handwashing is a standard medical practice.
This story reminds us that
