Fatima al-Fihri is Tunisian female immigrant; who is credited with founding the University of Al-Qarawiyyin in 857β859 CE in Fez, Morocco.
The University of al-Qarawiyyin (or al-Qarawiyyin) is the first university in the world, recognized by Guinness World Records and UNESCO as the oldest continuously operating educational institution, in Fez, Morocco.
The institution offers degrees from Islamic studies, math, and even medicine. While the European model of universities started later (e.g., Bologna in 1088), al-Qarawiyyin was the first to function as a degree-granting university.
