Formula of the Week
Ramanujanโs Formula for ฯ
Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887โ1920) was an Indian mathematician who, despite having almost no formal training in pure mathematics, made groundbreaking contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions. His remarkable series for ฯ, published in 1914, stunned the mathematical world for its extraordinary speed of convergence and depth of insight.
Why This Formula is Remarkable:
โข Each term of the series adds approximately 8 correct decimal digits of accuracy to ฯ
โข It became one of the fastest known methods for computing ฯ in the early 20th century
โข It was later rigorously proven using advanced concepts in modular forms and complex analysis
โข It laid foundations for modern high-precision ฯ algorithms used in computational mathematics
Ramanujanโs work continues to inspire mathematicians worldwide, reminding us that brilliance is not limited by circumstance but driven by vision, curiosity, and an extraordinary

First Aid Myth: Splashing water on someone who has fainted will wake them safely.
Fainting occurs when blood flow to the brain temporarily drops, leading to brief loss of consciousness. Pouring water on the face does not restore circulation and may increase choking risk if the person is not fully alert.
Correct response: lay the person flat on their back and gently raise the legs to improve blood flow to the brain. Loosen tight clothing and allow gradual recovery. Seek medical help if unconsciousness lasts more than a few minutes or breathing is abnormal.
