Monopoly is a market situation where there is a single firm selling the commodity and there is no close substitute of the commodity sold by the monopolist. It is very difficult for a new firm to enter the monopoly market. Consequently, a monopolist is more or less free to charge any price for his product by regulating its supply. 1. Large number of buyers and sellers

2. Free entry and exit of the firms

3. Product differentiation

4. Lack of perfect knowledge

5. Advertisement/ Selling costs

7. Industry is the price maker but Firm can partially influence the price - due to product differentiation D

6. More Elastic Demand Curve due to more options to the consumer

Oligopoly

It is that form of imperfect competition where a few big firms compete for their homogeneous products or differentiated products. There is interdependence of firms with regard to price-output decisions. Here, entry of a new firm in the industry is quite difficult. It is also referred as "Competition among the few".
Characteritics of Oligopoly:-

1. A few big firms

2. Difficult entry of a new firm

3. Interdependence decisions Firms are dependent on one another for price output

4. Product may be homogeneous (like steel) or differentiated (like cars)

5. Heavy Selling Costs

6. Price Rigidity or Group Behaviour

7. Indeterminate Demand Curve or Kinked Demand Curve Any change in price or output by one firm leads to a series of reactions by the rival firms. As a result, the demand curve of the oligopoly firm remains indeterminate.
