Japan Strategy | Near-term uncertainty
Japan Strategy - Continued near-term domestic political uncertainty likely. The inconclusive result of the 27 October Lower House election is likely to create a period of near-term political uncertainty for Japan-focused investors. When added to other outstanding concerns, such as the outcome of the upcoming US presidential election, as well as rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, the near-term outlook looks somewhat muted. We therefore reiterate the relatively cautious and defensive near-term stance that we presented in August and October. We see the positive impact of improving shareholder returns (expected during the upcoming 1H results season) to be largely offset by these risk factors. We focus our implementation ideas on 3 areas that could see relative out-performance in the near-term. These are: 1) a liquid high-quality screen; 2) a share buyback candidate screen; and 3) a weak yen beneficiaries basket. Bruce Kirk
