Key points
Oestrogens are produced in adipose tissue through aromatase activity, and oestrogens (including from the circulation) bind to their receptors on numerous cell types within adipose tissues.
Sex differences in metabolism might be, in part, attributed to the actions of oestrogen, including those specific to adipose tissues.
Oestrogens have protective effects on adipocyte metabolism, affecting each component of the ‘triad of adipocyte health’ — insulin sensitivity, inflammatory state and mitochondrial activity.
As many adipose functions are under the control of oestrogens, adipose tissue changes are probably pivotal mediators of the metabolic abnormalities associated with the menopausal transition, although this area remains under-studied.
