UAE helps treat more than 75,000 Gazan patients under Dh9.4 billion aid effort

The UAE has delivered extensive humanitarian aid to Gaza, providing medical treatment to about 75,000 people and evacuating 3,000 patients and their families for care in the Emirates. Since the war began in October 2023, the UAE has contributed Dh9.4 billion in aid to Gaza, including over 100,000 tonnes of supplies and millions of gallons of water. In 2025, the UAE ranked as the world’s third-largest aid donor, giving $1.46 billion globally and pledging $550 million to UN humanitarian efforts.

Abu Dhabi’s Sheikh Khalifa Medical City has become the first hospital in the world to administer Itvisma, a new one-dose gene therapy for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). The treatment replaces the defective SMN1 gene and was recently approved in the UAE after showing lasting improvements in patients’ motor abilities. Developed by Novartis, Itvisma can be used in children aged two and older as well as adults, expanding options beyond existing infant-only therapies.
