Tunisian Parliament Speaker Rached Ghannouchi calls on Tunisian people to 'restore democracy'

Developing: Since July 15, protesters have taken to the streets in more than a dozen cities in southwestern #Iran's Khuzestan province - including the capital of Ahwaz - to protest water shortages. The province is facing a severe drought, exacerbated by poor environmental planning, corruption, and poor water management. The oil-rich province is home not only to 80 percent of the country's oil but also to the ethnic Arab minority, which has faced severe discrimination and neglect over the decades.

⚡The Ukrainian Navy has accepted the delivery of the first Bayraktar TB2 drone from Turkish defense company Baykar, according to Ukraine’s Defence Ministry.

Fiame Naomi Mata’afa, #Samoa’s first female prime minister, took office more than three months after winning an election that her opponent refused to concede. The incumbent, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, conceded last week after Samoa’s top court ruled in Fiame’s favor.

An election commission appointed by #Myanmar’s ruling military junta officially nullified the results of November general elections won by deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy party. After the February coup, the military said the elections would be redone.

⚡#India: At least five police officers and one civilian were killed and more than fifty people were wounded in clashes near the border between Assam and the Mizoram States, which have been in a long-standing territorial dispute.

The leaders of Assam and neighboring Mizoram, which have been wrangling about their border for decades, blamed each other for the deadly violence.

Since last month, tensions have been building between the two states when officials in Mizoram alleged that Assam police had taken over a border post. Monday’s clash took place near the town of Vairengte.

Mizoram was a part of Assam until 1972 when it was split up. It became a state in its own right in 1986.

Mizoram said the area claimed by Assam has been used by its people for more than 100 years, but the Assamese insist that a large chunk of land has been forcibly seized.

Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu goes on trial in the #Vatican on charges of inappropriately spending more than $400 million in Church money. He is the most senior cleric ever to be tried for financial crimes by the Vatican, a move that comes amid Pope Francis’s drive to reform the Holy See’s finances.

All civilian airports in and around #Iran’s capital Tehran will close during the inauguration of President-elect Ebrahim Raisi on August 5, Tasnim news agency reported.

The move is unprecedented for presidential inaugurations, although on a few occasions airports have been shut down during armed forces day.

General Min Aung Hlaing, the military ruler of #Myanmar, named himself prime minister and extended a state of emergency by two years. He also promised to hold elections. In the six months since the army seized power nearly 7,000 political opponents have been arrested and hundreds killed.

The Russian hackers behind the #SolarWinds cyberespionage campaign broke into the email accounts of some of the country’s most prominent federal prosecutors’ offices last year, the Justice Department said. The Justice Department said 27 U.S. Attorney offices had at least one employee’s email account compromised during the hacking campaign, which it believes was carried out from May 7 to December 27, 2020, while 80% of Microsoft email accounts used by employees in the four U.S. attorney offices in New York were breached as well.

The International Monetary Fund’s board approved its largest-ever disbursement (FT) of $650 billion in Special Drawing Rights for member countries to boost their economic recoveries from the pandemic. The special reserves, which countries can choose to exchange for currency (Reuters) and are not required to repay, are set to be available on August 23.

The body of Vitaly Shishov, a Belarusian dissident living in exile in Ukraine, was found hanging in a park in Kyiv.

Shishov ran an NGO that helps Belarusians fleeing President Alexander Lukashenko’s regime to settle abroad.
