This is Peggy, a 94 year old wonderful patient of mine. She’s been on three different pharmaceuticals for many years (that’s actually a low number for somebody her age but she’s been relatively healthy). She was on blood pressure medication and when we got her started on a nutrition program, she was able to wean off the medication and her blood pressure is completely normal without it. I don’t know if she actually even needed it to begin with. She was also on medication for an underactive thyroid. When she weaned off of that, her thyroid function remained normal. I don’t know if she needed that one either. But the one that really upset me (and that’s putting it mildly) was a drug called gabapentin. This drug is used to block nerve signals. She began having burning feet many years ago and some idiot doctor prescribed this drug. It is extremely difficult to come off of and most people have such severe withdrawal symptoms that they give up trying to wean off it. I recognized that one of the main symptoms of vitamin B 12 deficiency is burning feet. I asked her if her medical doctors had checked her vitamin B 12 levels, but she was not certain. I gave her some excellent quality vitamin B12 from the whole food brand I use (Standard Process) and her burning feet improved immediately.
Fortunately, due to her perseverance, she was able to finally fully wean off the gabapentin and is now free of any pharmaceuticals.
Something you should know about vitamin B12 - your stomach produces a substance called intrinsic factor, which is necessary for your body to absorb the B12. The production of intrinsic factor declines with age and it is the reason why some people become deficient in this vitamin. Additionally, you need to produce adequate stomach acid to absorb B12 and if you’re taking a stomach acid inhibitor vitamin B 12, along with many other nutrients, will not be absorbed as effectively.
The vitamin B 12 I use has intrinsic factor in it so no matter what stage your body is in the vitamin can actually be absorbed. The pharmaceutical solution is to bypass the digestion altogether and give you injections of B12. Even though the B12 is a “vitamin“ an injection is still a pharmaceutical made in a lab and it’s synthetic. You’re much better off with nutrients that are derived from food.
