Der Bundesnachrichtendienst (BND), der deutsche Auslandsgeheimdienst, hat Angaben des stellvertretenden Chefredakteurs der Zeit zufolge mehrere ehemalige US-Präsidenten teils ohne Zustimmung der deutschen Regierung abhören lassen. Betroffen waren von den Lauschangriffen wohl die Präsidenten Obama und Bill Clinton, die damalige Außenministerin Hillary Clinton, sowie das US-Militär.
Zum Abhören hätte sich der BND eine Schwachstelle in der Kommunikation des Präsidentenflugzeugs zunutze gemacht. Ein dauerhaftes Abhören habe es aber nicht gegeben.
Der BND äußerte sich nicht zu den Berichten. Auch ist unklar, ob die Bundesregierung oder das parlamentarische Kontrollgremium über die Vorgänge informiert worden war, oder ob der BND eigenmächtig gehandelt hat.
2013 wurde durch den Whistleblower Edward Snowden bekannt, dass die USA über Jahre unter anderem die damalige Bundeskanzlerin Merkel überwachen ließen. Dies hatte zu diplomatischen Verwerfungen zwischen den USA und Deutschland geführt.
