BREAKING: FBI agents raided the home of Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao Thursday morning, sources told CBS News Bay Area.

Agents served warrants at Thao's home on Maiden Lane in the city's Lincoln Highlands neighborhood at around 5:30 a.m.

In a statement to CBS News Bay Area, the FBI said, "The FBI is conducting court authorized law enforcement activity on Maiden Lane. We are unable to provide additional information at this time."

It was unclear what the agents were seeking or what was seized.

CBS News Bay Area has reached out to Mayor Thao's office about a response to the raid.

Aldrich apparently identifies as neither male nor female and goes by "gender non-conforming" pronouns, according to a footnote his public defenders authored in a court filing requesting that he be allowed to wear civilian clothes at his arraignment.

"Anderson Aldrich is non-binary. They use they/them pronouns, and for the purposes of all formal filings, will be addressed as Mx. Aldrich," Aldrich's defense attorneys wrote of their client in a May 2023 motion filed in his state-level Colorado case, which was separate from the federal proceedings.

Taiwanese fishermen catch Chinese nuclear submarine surfacing

Taiwan said it “closely monitored” a Chinese nuclear submarine that surfaced in the shallow waters of the Taiwan Strait early Tuesday.

The submarine surprised the crew of a squid boat, which took pictures of the vessel.

The images showed the black hull of a Type 094 submarine, also known as the Jin class, Newsweek reported. The Jin class, six of which are in service, can launch ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads and are sometimes referred to as “boomers.”

Jim Jordan asks DOJ watchdog to investigate whether FBI 'purging' agents with conservative views

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan on Thursday asked the Justice Department's chief watchdog to open an investigation into whether the FBI has been using political litmus tests to push out agents or workers with conservative political views and sent a stark warning to Director Christopher Wray.

"The FBI appears to be purging itself of employees who do not share its preferred political views," Jordan wrote in a letter to Wray after sending a separate letter to DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz seeking the inquiry.

Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. suggested that the current bird flu outbreak among cows in the United States may be related to nearly a decade of controversial gain-of-function experiments on viruses, citing the financial windfall public health agencies and the pharmaceutical industry stand to gain from mRNA vaccines against the virus.

“With so much money on the table, is it conceivable that someone might deliberately release a bioengineered bird flu? When this kind of gain-of-function research is going on, accidental or deliberate leaks are inevitable,” Kennedy wrote in an X article.
