Hey you guys, I built a web app called Dotune to help you discover new artists and fresh tracks. It uses the Spotify API to access your saved songs and LastFM API to find similar tracks. Any new songs not already in your library are added to your recommendations, giving you fresh music to enjoy.

Sad news tho, Due to Spotify’s updated policy (as of May 15, 2025), the API now only supports Extended Quota mode for organizations, limiting individual accounts to 25 users in development mode. If you want to try it, fill out this form and get your playlist.

Access is first come, first serve, only the first 25 users will be able to have Dotune access their saved tracks and generate a playlist.

Tech Stack:
- Frontend: Next.js, Tailwind CSS
- Backend: TypeScript
- APIs: Spotify API, Last.fm API
- Database: PostgreSQL
- Authentication: Better Auth

Challenges:
- Spotify’s deprecated “get recommendations” endpoint → workaround: used Last.fm API
- Preview URL for audio deprecated → full track streaming not available
- Limit of 100 tracks per playlist in a single request
- not being able to use the Spotify API in a extended qouta mode ( possible walkaround for this is to let the user use their own API key )

2017 Recap

First of all, I want to say እግዚአብሔር ይመስገን

This might get a bit personal so brace yourself, the year started a bit rough to be honest, the first 4 months was tough, but those months were the ones that taught me for everything that you experience God has a reason, and he is protecting you, you might not see it at the moment, but as time passes and as the dots start connecting you will understand, so believe me when I tell you trust his plans for you, because his plans for you is much more greater that you would expect, and pray for strength to handle the struggles that come along the way, if there are failures, use them as a stepping stone, those experience are shaping you to become the person that you were suppose to be.

Now to the good part, after a good consideration, I got out of my comfort zone ( an introvert btw ) and volunteered to organize the Developer V3 meetup along side incredible people, I got too meet a lot of people, it is the best highlight of my year, was such a great event, became a part of WTM Ethiopia core member alongside awesome people, whom I cherish from the bottom of my heart, and then created a personal channel through which I got to meet you guys, I really appreciate each and every one of you, I hope you like it here, also this was a year I choose my interest, myself, and made a decision that made ME happy ( trying to kill the people pleaser in me one step at a time ), for the people pleasers here ( if there are any ), those who truly love you and care for you will actually root for you when you choose something that makes you happy instead of them ( so you are pleasing them in a way, don't worry lol)

This year was a year that I was blessed with people and fell in love with the Ethiopian tech community, for those of you am close to and have worked with, had the chance to meet and anyone I got to encounter through the Ethiopian tech community I really really love you, you guys are literally one of the reasons I thank God, I love you guys, you are one of my blessings, you are a blessing.

Now to the best part, I have been working on my spirituality, and my relationship with God. if it were for my sins I wouldn't deserve to be at his presence, but he showed me his endless mercy, I have no words except እግዚአብሔር ይመስገን።
