Why arenβt people getting married anymore?
Lib-right view of the world is that,
(1) Every interaction in the world can be framed as a kind of TRADE
(2) Every interaction among people that has ever worked well β has involved anticipated MUTUAL BENEFIT
(3) Donβt see how some exchange that worked well involved anticipated mutual benefit? β Youβre wrong and youβre just not looking hard enough
So,
If some exchange has STOPPED occurring, it is one or both sides who used to believe they stood to benefit
β No longer sees themselves as standing to benefit from entering into this exchange
Simple as that
People stopped getting married because something changed, and now one or both sides no longer see themselves as standing to benefit from entering into this exchange
Canβt see marriage as an exchange?
Then youβre part of the problem
The most important single central fact about a free market is that no exchange takes place unless both parties benefit

Oldest known contract in the world, at ~4000 years?
A marriage contract
One laying out financial penalties for the wife should she be unwilling or unable to uphold her end of the deal
β If she didnβt produce a child within 2 years, SHE would have to pay for a surrogate mother
Voluntary exchange, by way of entering into mutually-beneficial agreements, where one side faces a substantial penalty if they donβt uphold there end of the deal
β Employed since literally the dawn of time
But then,
All promises and penalties for one side were gradually removed, until it was entirely unilateral
Unsurprisingly,
Suddenly far fewer are agreeing to enter into such unilateral exchanges
Like it or not, Friedman was right
