The world's 1 AI Safety Researcher, Amanda Askell (Head of Personality Alignment at Anthropic) wrote in favor of using AI to automate racial collective punishment, saying:

- "Discriminating against white students may be desirable ... to correct for historical injustices"

During her next media tour stop, juror Paula Devlin says the mostly female jury knew the Lindsay Clancy trial could create change to β€œmake it better for other women.”

β€œWe knew that this was a turning point, and this would be something that could change something to make it better for other women…”

A Chinese satellite that may have helped Iran kill U.S. soldiers just mysteriously broke apart in orbit, and nobody is explaining why...

China supplied Iran with high-res satellite imagery of a U.S. military base in Jordan before an Iranian attack in July, according to the Wall Street Journal.

That attack killed 2 American service members...

They called it the clearest evidence yet that Chinese support for Iran had LETHAL consequences for U.S. forces.

6 weeks later, China's Yaogan-50 military reconnaissance satellite, the type used to gather imagery of military bases, ships, and troop movements, broke apart in orbit creating 43+ debris fragments.

Cause: officially unknown.

China's embassy DENIES the imagery claims. U.S. officials stopped short of alleging direct Chinese government involvement.

But the sequence is difficult to ignore:

Chinese satellite data helps kill American soldiers, and a Chinese military reconnaissance satellite silently disintegrates weeks later with no explanation...

Did the U.S. take it out?

Nobody is saying that.

Nobody is saying they didn't.

Zebrafish NN

It’s pretty amazing to learn that efforts to map the fruit FLY connectome (brain synapses) were successful and its amazing to see the digital fly brain successfully complete a whole series of tasks, including complex navigation of open worlds.

The fruit fly is 160,000 neurons and 10^7 synapses.

Teams are currently doing the same thing with a zebrafish which has a similar scale neuron count but 10x more synapses. Fly was 100TB raw data and Zebrafish is 200TB, so about 2x the raw data.

For context a rodent is 70m neurons and 10^11 synapses. Rodents will come later.

But this method looks like it creates totally outsized results with absolutely miniscule models.

Zebrafish NN is a vertebrae connectome, it has much of the same basic structure as other vertebrae, unlike FLY connectome.

We are just about used to LLMs and coding, but AI is really just beginning and there is a lot more, and a lot weirder stuff coming down the pipe.

These connectomes have already shown to be incredibly resilient, you can blind their sensors and injure their outputs and they still succeed.

They are incredibly compact.

A whole lot of inanimate objects are going to get complete autonomy, totally offline, air gapped autonomy. They will be delivering pizzas and fighting wars.

Connectomics is an opposite approach to LLMs but you can of course use LLMs to help develop connectomes.

It’s amazing that you can take a biologically evolved brain, map it, produce a digital twin, and then run it at machine speed.

Imagine a human brain accelerated from 100Hz neuron fires to 3,200,000,000Hz that a typical CPU runs at. That’s 30 million times faster. But would need 1-2 exabytes to map.

Anyway β€œZebrafish” is next.

This may be one of the eeriest - and frankly, most terrifying - 9/11 reconstructions I’ve seen.

The simulation recreates the final moments of American Airlines Flight 11 from the cockpit, essentially showing what hijacker Mohamed Atta would have seen as the North Tower rapidly filled the windshield.

But the audio you’re hearing is real.

Flight attendant Betty Ong, aboard Flight 11, was calmly reporting what was happening inside the hijacked aircraft - crew members stabbed, mace in the cabin, the cockpit inaccessible, and the realization: β€œI think we’re getting hijacked.”

American Airlines operations specialist Nydia Gonzalez was monitoring Ong’s call and relaying her reports to the airline’s operations center as Flight 11 raced toward New York.

At 8:46 a.m., the aircraft struck the North Tower.

Watching a reconstruction of what the hijacker would have seen while simultaneously hearing the actual voices of the people trapped aboard that aircraft is deeply unsettling.

A 24-year-old woman and a man believed to be in his 20s were struck and killed by a southbound 4 train at Spring Street station around 3:14 a.m. Sunday. Both were on the tracks as the train entered, and the operator could not stop in time. It remains unclear why they were on the roadbed

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei says he would be willing to give up control of AI to the right β€œcombination” of governments.

Amodei has pushed for greater government regulation of the AI sphere to attenuate progress. Critics suggest he wants to maintain frontier lab centralization of the market.

Fruit Fly now can play T-rex

I connected a real fruit fly’s brain to the Chrome Dinosaur game.

simulation of a Drosophila melanogaster connectome playing the Chrome T Rex runner.

Built from 23,210 reconstructed somas and 10,431 synapses from the FlyWire v783 electron microscopy dataset. Visual looming expansion stimulates LC4/LPLC2 projection neurons, which propagate through a 50 Hz leaky integrate-and-fire network. When the Giant Fiber (DNp01) descending neuron reaches threshold, an escape jump is triggered.
