Or, more specifically, there was no apparent RL slowdown from Fable 5 to 5.1, and there’s nothing in here about Anthropic themselves slowing down their own RL, either post- or pre-training.

But Dario is correct in terms of where this is going. He thinks Anthropic is approaching RSI this year. OpenAI assumes they’ll reach a heavily assisted form of RSI this year, and we already have rumors of Google, (despite what Sergey Brin expressed to his team 3 days ago), having “cracked RSI.”

Dario points this out directly in the article:

“Since roughly this summer, AI has been advancing drastically faster, driven primarily by AI’s growing ability to build the next generation of AI.”

And:

“As models build future models, the rate of improvement may become staggeringly fast.”

And then, of course, we always have to fearmonger a little bit and note that in 6–12 months such a swarm could be capable of taking over the entire internet with a persistent botnet.

This is true if we released a heavily misaligned form of what we’ll have in 6-12 months with OpenAI onto the internet.

However, this is exactly why alignment research is so critical, and I hope the labs continue putting it first!
