Muzamil Ahmed, 35, was arrested at New York’s JFK Airport while trying to board an Emirates flight to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He is accused of playing a central role in an international operation that stole more than $250 million from over 200 victims, many of them elderly Americans.
Scammers operating from overseas call centers posed as bank employees or federal agents and terrified seniors into believing their accounts or identities had been compromised. Victims were instructed to empty their savings and convert the money into gold bars, Bitcoin or cash before couriers posing as federal agents collected it.
Prosecutors say Ahmed operated from New Jersey, created shell companies to launder the stolen money, funneled proceeds through a Florida gold refinery, converted gold and cash into cryptocurrency and moved the money overseas.
At least one victim later committed suicide after being left destitute.
