The program collects $1.44 trillion.
Social Security spends $1.67 trillion.
The deficits are covered by selling treasury bonds that social security built up over decades.
In 2032 that fund of treasury bonds will be empty. Then Congress and the President have to make a decision. Current law automatically will cut benefits by 22%. So Congress has to decide whether:
1) let the cuts happen
2) raise taxes to cover the cuts in benefits
3) just use the general revenue funds and let the overall budget deficit increase by about $600 billion per year in 2033.

Currency debasement is back in focus for investors:
The word "debasement" appeared in 1,533 Bloomberg articles last week, the highest weekly count since January 2026.
This was also the 3rd-highest number of weekly mentions on record.
This figure more than doubled from the prior week and surged +750% in 2 weeks.
By comparison, the weekly record in January 2026 was ~1,680 mentions.
The surge comes as investors are increasingly moving toward gold and Bitcoin amid US Treasury intervention in the bond market.

In Sept 2024, Norwegian residents found that out the hard way, discovering too late that Bitcoin mining had for years been keeping their power prices 20% lower.
When a Bitcoin mining operation left the grid, local power company Noranett instantly increased prices to residents, to compensate for the revenue shortfall.
The news was covered by government state owned media organization NRK (analogous to BBC)
Bitcoin mining has been found in multiple studies to be able to use energy that would otherwise be wasted, which contributes to lower electricity bills.
This is one of a number of cases where Bitcoin mining has direct lowered electricity prices. I'll be sharing some other documented cases this week.
