Yes. The Linux Kernel is removing support for MORE hardware.

This time, Linux kernel devs have added an “unconditional” requirement for TSC (“Time Stamp Counter”) on x86 class CPUs as part of the Linux 7.2 release.

Effectively this means that Linux will refuse to boot on the following processors:

- Intel 486

- Some early Pentium variants

- IDT WinChip

- AMD K5 and a variety of others

While an argument could be made that these CPUs (many from the mid-90s) are less commonly used nowadays, it’s also worth noting that this is part of a wider (increasing) trend of Linux dropping hardware support.

386 & 486 class CPUs. Intel Itanium CPUs. AMD Elan. AMD K5. A large number of network drivers. Ham radio. ATM drivers. Bus mice.

Linux support for all of them dropped in the last few years (most in the last few months). And that’s just a partial list.

The top 9 US tech firms have ~$3 trillion in off-balance-sheet commitments, including leases for data centers and power infrastructure that have not yet commenced, as well as purchase commitments for AI-related equipment and services.

Jason Arday dying at just 40 is sad, and I have sympathy for his family. But I don’t understand how the takeaway from all of this is that we now need a law limiting how long the media can cover someone.

Serious questions had been raised about plagiarism and his academic record. Journalists looking into those claims were doing their job. His death doesn’t suddenly make those questions illegitimate or mean the scrutiny should never have happened.

You can feel terrible about how this ended without pretending he was being investigated for no reason.
