Wealth inequality stats are the most effective propaganda tool for pretending a richer society is falling apart.
They count a med studentβs loans the exact same as a destitute personβs debts, so a subsistence farmer with nothing owed ranks βwealthierβ on paper than a first year doctor carrying six figures in student debt.
Meyer and Sullivan tracked actual consumption instead of income or net worth and found that from 2000 to 2011 income inequality rose 19% while the inequality in what people actually get to use and enjoy stayed roughly flat.

An elderly couple was reportedly injured after an Arkansas State Police trooper performed a PIT maneuver on a suspect's vehicle.
Everyone is still alive but seriously injured.
Police say the Sonata's driver, 32-year-old Laloyd L. Hamilton, did not stop and accelerated to approximately 130 mph as they pursued him. When the chase reached the 28-mile marker, the Trooper performed a PIT maneuver that caused the fleeing vehicle to violently crash into another car carrying a 68-year-old woman and a 73-year-old man.
A search of the suspectβs vehicle resulted in the recovery of narcotics, including illegal marijuana, pills, and an unknown liquid substance.

Yes. The Linux Kernel is removing support for MORE hardware.
This time, Linux kernel devs have added an βunconditionalβ requirement for TSC (βTime Stamp Counterβ) on x86 class CPUs as part of the Linux 7.2 release.
Effectively this means that Linux will refuse to boot on the following processors:
- Intel 486
- Some early Pentium variants
- IDT WinChip
- AMD K5 and a variety of others
While an argument could be made that these CPUs (many from the mid-90s) are less commonly used nowadays, itβs also worth noting that this is part of a wider (increasing) trend of Linux dropping hardware support.
386 & 486 class CPUs. Intel Itanium CPUs. AMD Elan. AMD K5. A large number of network drivers. Ham radio. ATM drivers. Bus mice.
Linux support for all of them dropped in the last few years (most in the last few months). And thatβs just a partial list.

Global bond markets are flashing warning signs, and the most indebted countries are feeling it worst.
Government borrowing costs are climbing to new highs around the world, a sign investors are losing patience after years of heavy spending and borrowing since COVID.
In plain terms, lending money to governments is getting pricier, because markets are starting to doubt some countries can handle their massive debts.
Over the past 10 days, Japan has been hit hardest, followed by the UK, France, and Italy, all places drowning in debt with messy politics.
The spark was a mix of rising U.S. rates and the latest oil spike from the unresolved Gulf war.
But the deeper issue is simpler: when you owe a fortune and keep overspending, any little shock can knock you over.
The ones holding steady? Countries like Switzerland that actually kept their finances in check.

Hidden AI-related commitments are skyrocketing among Big Tech companies:
The top 9 US tech firms have ~$3 trillion in off-balance-sheet commitments, including leases for data centers and power infrastructure that have not yet commenced, as well as purchase commitments for AI-related equipment and services.
This is roughly triple the amount that these firms report on their balance sheets in leases and long-term debt.
This also compares to ~$600 billion in CapEx reported over the last year.
Alphabet, $GOOGL, alone posted an increase of more than +800% YoY in off-balance-sheet obligations, more than 7 times its YoY increase in CapEx.
This was followed by Meta, $META, which reported an increase of more than +750% YoY in such obligations, more than 9 times the increase in CapEx over the same period.
AI infrastructure is driving one of the largest corporate investment waves in history.

Jason Arday dying at just 40 is sad, and I have sympathy for his family. But I donβt understand how the takeaway from all of this is that we now need a law limiting how long the media can cover someone.
Serious questions had been raised about plagiarism and his academic record. Journalists looking into those claims were doing their job. His death doesnβt suddenly make those questions illegitimate or mean the scrutiny should never have happened.
You can feel terrible about how this ended without pretending he was being investigated for no reason.

In 1933, the federal government made it a crime for Americans to own gold and forced them to hand it over at $20.67 an ounce, then raised the official price to $35 less than a year later.
Roosevelt signed Executive Order 6102 on April 5 and used a rewritten World War I law that no longer required actual war. Congress had already stripped that limit so any declared emergency worked.
Citizens got until May 1 to comply or face $10,000 fines and 10 years in prison. Over 2,600 metric tons changed hands.
The Gold Reserve Act of 1934 locked in the new higher price after the seizure was complete. The ban stayed in place for more than 40 years. Americans could not legally own gold bullion again until 1974.

A U.S. Navy destroyer spent four straight days without power in the South China Sea.
The USS Benfold lost its generators last month. No toilets, no air conditioning, no galley, no potable water, in blistering heat that hit nearly 100Β°F.
Crew had to be fed by another ship and eventually towed to the Philippines for repairs. No one was hurt, but the incident highlights how stretched the Navy is getting while juggling the Iran war and global commitments.
