This young mechanic is warning β€œlisten before you try to work as a mechanic” hit hard.

In his story he explains how pay is now garbage, you have to start with your own $40,000 set of tools and your hours get cut. You then work on cars that are impossible to diagnose.

My late uncle Jack sold his shop 20 years ago for the exact same reason. Cars were becoming too complicated for old-school wrenchers like him. He saw it coming.

What’s happening now isn’t accidental. There’s a clear push to force every repair through the dealership. They load these cars with proprietary electrical systems, modules, and computers that require manufacturer-specific tools, software subscriptions, and certifications just to diagnose.

That barrier costs a fortune. Independent shops can’t keep up with the tool prices, the training, the locked-down diagnostics. So the mom-and-pop places that used to keep your car running for a fair price get squeezed out. Customers get funneled to the dealer where the labor rates are higher and the incentive is often to sell more work (or a new car).

This isn’t progress. It’s control of the aftermarket. Right-to-repair exists on paper in some places, but the practical reality is that modern vehicles are designed to be opaque to anyone without the factory key.

Uncle Jack saw the writing on the wall two decades ago. The kid in that TikTok is living it now. The skilled trades that built this country are being engineered out of the independent repair business, one locked module at a time.

Support the shops that still fight to stay independent. And push harder on actual right-to-repair that includes the software and tools, not just the parts.

"Then the poor, deprived of their land, were no longer eager for military service and had few children, so that soon all Italy was bereft of freemen and filled with gangs of foreign slaves, through whom the rich cultivated their estates, having driven away the free citizens."

- Plutarch, The Life of Tiberius Gracchus.

Sound familiar?

Want 100k a year... doing nothing. Here is how

This is the biggest side hustle I do. I was debating to post it or not, but what the hell.

Every 3 months to a year a new vehicle is announced that will be hyper popular that they allow you to put a $100 deposit on.

The Slate truck, the Scout Terra, Hummer ev, Cybertruck, Bronco, Ram TRX.. All are examples.

I put $100 deposits on the vehicle the second it becomes available. Multiple vehicles if possible (I only got 1 bronco before they sold out, but got 5 Slate trucks, 3 TRX's, 4 cyberbeasts etc).

When you get your confirmation emails that the vehicles are going to show, post that on ebay and sell them for $10,000, $20,000 or $30,000 over sticker.

The fastest I ever sold one was the Bronco, I sold it before I got it and before I even paid for it. The longest was a Hummer EV took me a week to get rid of it.

Some tips.

1. You must order them AS SOON AS they come out. Later doesn't work. People who are paying so much over sticker want them NOW. So only the first ones go so far over MSRP. If you wait, thousands of other people get them first. So put it on the calendar and get as many as possible as soon as possible.

2. ALWAYS get the highest trim. Every option possible. If there is a launch/foundation edition get that. You want exclusivity. The people paying over sticker are not paying over for the base model.

3. Color. Always get the best color. This is subjective, but most brands have a halo color. Get that. When unsure, its the wildest color usually.

4. List for sale as soon as you get the order confirmation. You post the build sheet, vin, confirmation order on ebay. This way people can buy it as soon as possible.

5. Register them in montana. You can use 3rd party companies to register an llc in montana, I use mttitles . com. This allows you to get super cheap registration (hundreds of dollars) but more importantly pay no sales tax. Many states are cracking down, but its a moot point because youre not driving it around, you just get the temp tag at the dealer and sell it before plates ever come.

6. Get refunds on losers. If your order is ready to come in and people are selling pre-orders on ebay for crazy money, or you can still easily reserve a new one for quick delivery, cancel it and get your $100 back (I did this on the ford lightning, what a turd).

My current deposits are as follows

5 Slate Trucks

4 Scout Terras

4 Scout Traveller suvs

4 REO trucks
