Taiwan and Cuba dealt very differently with the pressure exerted by major superpowers.

Taiwan has been excluded from the UN since 1971 with almost no formal allies left because of China, yet the world is still reliant on it for the production of advanced computer chips. Its GDP per capita is over $41,000.

Cuba on the other hand has been under a US trade embargo since 1962, over 1.7 million people have fled the island, and it’s still blaming the US for yet another 5% decline in its economy and 70% inflation.

The difference is the market. Systems fail because of the choices made under the imposed pressure, not the pressure itself.
