It's been 12 years since Yazidi sisters Jilan and Jihan chose death over rape and forced conversion to Islam at the hands of ISIS.

The two sisters were kidnapped when ISIS launched its genocidal assault on Iraq's Sinjar region in August 2014.

According to accounts from survivors and relatives, an ISIS militant ordered them to wash before they were to be sexually enslaved. Rather than submit, Jilan slit her wrists, while Jihan used an electric wire to take her own life.

Their story became one of the most heartbreaking symbols of the ISIS genocide against the Yazidis, during which thousands were murdered and thousands of women and girls were abducted, raped, and enslaved for refusing to abandon their faith.

Today, around 200,000 Yazidis remain displaced more than a decade after the ISIS genocide, thousands are still missing, and many survivors continue to live in camps, unable to return home because of insecurity, destroyed infrastructure, and competing armed groups.

Official data obtained from Spain's National Social Security Institute (INSS) shows that 69,517 Moroccan nationals receive Spain's Minimum Vital Income (IMV), nearly half of the 139,446 foreign beneficiaries recorded by the agency.
