One of them was freed after transferring $30,000, but the other says he was then "sold" to a second gang. The whole thing finally ended in a police chase hitting 70mph through residential streets, which wrapped up with the getaway car crashing into a lamp post.
Six men have now been convicted, though the ringleader ran it all by WhatsApp from overseas and is still out there.
And that's the ugly lesson underneath it. Carry life-changing money on a phone and you become a target for people who'll torture you for the password.
