Trait mindfulness acts as a key psychological buffer against psychotic-like experiences (PLEs) when engaging with AI-generated content.
In a study of 527 participants, researchers examined subclinical psychotic-like experiences, such as unusual perceptual disturbances, mild hallucinatory phenomena, and blurred self-boundaries, during brief listening sessions with AI-generated music.
What is especially interesting is that mindfulness did not make the experience flatter or more distant. It deepened immersion. Participants felt more present inside the music and more able to perceive it as responsive or interactive, yet these sensations were associated with fewer disturbances rather than more.
The difference may be in how deeply a person can enter an experience without losing their position inside it. Mindfulness seems to allow the mind to move closer to artificial environments without becoming psychologically absorbed by them. Presence becomes grounding. Interactivity becomes orientation. The experience can feel vivid, intimate, even strangely alive, while the self remains intact.
As AI-generated media becomes more "real," the question may not be whether it alters perception, but whether the mind entering it knows how to return to itself.
