Researchers ran AIDE² autonomously for eight days with two loops: an inner agent solved research tasks, while an outer agent repeatedly rewrote the inner agent’s own harness based on performance.

After 100 iterations, it independently discovered a better search policy, and a 16× prompt compression memory system and a stronger defenses against reward hacking!

These improvements transferred to benchmarks the outer loop had never seen! The self-improved agent raised performance from 0.673 to 0.739 on MLE-Bench Lite, from 1,536 to 1,790 on ALE-Bench Lite, and from 0.668 to 0.803 on the out-of-distribution WeatherBench 2 task.

That works out to 10%, 16.5% and 20% improvements, and it beat the harness humans had spent two years tuning on all three benchmarks!!
