GOLDMAN SACHS BANS EMPLOYEES FROM BETTING ON PREDICTION MARKETS

Goldman staff can no longer bet on elections, financial markets, or geopolitics on platforms like Polymarket.

Sports and entertainment bets are still allowed.

Six months ago CEO David Solomon called prediction markets "super interesting" and met with platform heads.

The ban followed a Google employee who made $1.2 million on Polymarket using nonpublic information, per CFTC charges.

Jersey Mike’s sandwiches have shrunk dramatically. I just got one and was shocked how small it is.

I looked it up… sure enough there was a private equity takeover. Blackstone took over control in 2024.

Now they are doing an IPO again. Blackstone ruined the sandwiches and probably loaded up the new company with debt.

A once excellent sandwich chain has gone downhill with private equity.

Turns out it's possible to generate videos that maximally excite an arbitrary brain region using a simple search-based algorithm. It's a fully computational approach, so it's another way to speculate what a brain region represents, alongside other neuroscientific methods.

Select an arbitrary brain region->algorithmically generate a video that jacks it up. See the visuals on the webpage nevo-project.epfl.ch

A Dutch citizen watches from his window as a crowd of immigrants fills the street, blasting Islamic Shiite religious chants and beating their chests in a mourning ritual commemorating the death of Imam Hussein, a 7th-century religious figure revered by Shiite Muslims as the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, who was killed at the Battle of Karbala in 680 AD

Taller men have a much harder time telling masculine faces from feminine ones than shorter men. In the study, researchers showed 112 young men faces that had been digitally edited to look more or less masculine or feminine, then asked them to quickly say whether each face was male or female. The taller and heavier guys’ answers barely changed no matter how much the faces had been altered. Shorter men’s judgments, by contrast, were much more sensitive to the same changes. Men were also better overall at noticing these masculinity cues in other men’s faces than in women’s faces. Evolutionarily, accurately reading dominance signals in other men’s faces would have helped guys decide whether to compete or steer clear of conflict. Shorter men, facing greater physical risk, would have especially benefited from picking up on these cues to gauge danger or assess rivals more accurately, while taller men could afford to be less responsive since misjudging carried lower costs for them.

In the logistic regression, the key interaction odds ratio was 0.66 for both height and weight (and 0.70 for BMI). The effect size was moderate but consistent and statistically reliable. This means that for every standard deviation increase in a man’s height (about 4.2 cm / 1.6 inches in this sample), the influence of the facial masculinity/femininity changes on his gender judgments dropped by roughly 34%. The main effect of the facial changes was very large overall, but it was noticeably weaker the taller/heavier the man was.
