Health authorities have confirmed Australia’s first diphtheria death since 2018, marking a sobering milestone in the country’s largest outbreak of the bacterial infection in decades.

The victim, a man in Darwin, died in April. An autopsy later identified diphtheria toxin as the probable cause of death.

Diphtheria was once among the world’s most dreaded childhood diseases. Before vaccines, it killed thousands annually by inflaming the throat and airways, often forming a thick gray membrane that could suffocate victims. In Australia, widespread immunization largely eliminated the disease by the 1940s, making it a distant memory for generations.

That changed in late 2025 when cases began rising sharply. An outbreak was formally declared earlier this year. The Northern Territory has recorded 163 cases so far, including 48 respiratory infections — the most serious form of the disease. Additional cases have been reported in Queensland and South Australia.

Officials link the resurgence in part to declining vaccination rates. In response, authorities launched an intensive immunization drive, delivering more than 10,000 vaccine doses in just seven weeks. The effort appears to be working: new infections have dropped significantly, with only nine cases reported in the past week compared to 22 at the peak of the outbreak.

Diphtheria spreads through respiratory droplets from coughs and sneezes or by contact with contaminated objects. Symptoms include fever, sore throat, swollen neck glands, difficulty swallowing, and a characteristic gray-white coating in the throat. In severe cases, the toxin can damage the heart, nerves, and other organs.

This outbreak serves as a clear reminder: even diseases long held at bay by vaccination can return when immunization rates fall.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has cleared a major new noninvasive cancer therapy that uses focused ultrasound waves to destroy tumors without surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation.

Known as the Edison System by HistoSonics, the technology, called histotripsy, delivers precise, high-intensity sound pulses that mechanically break down and liquefy cancerous tissue while leaving surrounding healthy structures intact.

Because the procedure requires no incisions, it significantly reduces bleeding risks. Many patients, including those on blood thinners, can go home the same day.

Early clinical results have been highly promising. A pivotal study showed a 95% technical success rate with very low rates of major complications. The treatment is currently approved for primary liver tumors and tumors that have spread to the liver from other organs.
