A revolutionary computer built from living human brain cells has just been released.

Australian startup Cortical Labs has launched the CL1, the world’s first commercially available biological computer powered by real human neurons.

The shoebox-sized system integrates living brain cells, grown in a nutrient medium, with conventional silicon chips. These neurons are wired into the hardware, enabling them to receive input, process information biologically, and produce outputs in a way that mimics natural brain activity.

The CL1 is the commercial evolution of Cortical Labs’ earlier DishBrain system, which gained fame for teaching lab-grown neurons to play Pong.

With the ability to learn and adapt in real time, and cells that stay alive for up to six months, the CL1 promises to transform neuroscience, AI research, and pharmaceutical testing by providing a living model of human brain behavior that far surpasses traditional simulations.

Priced at $35,000 for purchase or available through cloud-based rental, the CL1 marks a major step toward “synthetic biological intelligence.”

While ethical questions about sentience and the use of human brain tissue are already being raised, researchers emphasize that the system remains far from anything resembling true consciousness.

Researchers have developed a flexible, breathable skin patch that can effectively target and destroy melanoma cancer cells while sparing healthy tissue. The innovative device uses laser-induced graphene embedded with copper(II) oxide nanoparticles within a soft silicone (PDMS) matrix. The patch remains inactive until gently heated to about 108°F (42°C) with a low-power laser, at which point it releases copper ions directly into the tumor.

In preclinical mouse studies, the “heat-and-release” patch reduced melanoma lesions by 97% within just 10 days after two one-hour treatments. Beyond shrinking the primary tumor, the patch triggered multiple forms of programmed cell death (including apoptosis, cuproptosis, and ferroptosis), reduced cancer cell migration, and stimulated an immune response that helped prevent metastasis. Importantly, it showed no significant damage to surrounding healthy skin and avoided harmful copper accumulation in major organs.

The patch is stretchable, transparent, reusable, and easy to apply, making it a potentially convenient and less invasive alternative to traditional surgical excision for skin cancer.

While the results are highly encouraging, the technology is still in the early experimental stage and requires further testing before human clinical use.

Another historic temple has burned in Japan.

On the evening of May 16, a fire broke out at Daihoji Temple in Takaoka, Toyama Prefecture.

The temple is said to have been founded in 1453, during Japan’s Muromachi period.

Firefighters responded with around 20 fire trucks, and although all four residents were confirmed safe, the main hall was burned.

The cause is still under investigation.

But this year, there have been far too many fires at shrines and temples across Japan.

These are not just old buildings.

They are pieces of Japan’s memory, faith, and history.

Once they are gone, they can never truly be replaced.
