An edible mushroom is invading forests across the U.S.

The golden oyster mushroom (Pleurotus citrinopileatus), beloved for its vivid yellow caps and mild flavor, is escaping cultivation and invading wild forests across the United States. New research from the University of Florida documents its presence in natural areas in more than 25 states, with recent sightings pushing south into Texas, Louisiana, and Florida.

This bright fungus is turning into a serious ecological concern.

Once established on dead wood, golden oysters aggressively outcompete native fungi, drastically reducing local species diversity. In one study, elm logs colonized by the invader supported far fewer native fungal partners—some of which play key roles in decomposition, nutrient cycling, and even human medicine.

The primary driver of the invasion is human activity. Widely sold as easy-to-grow home kits, gourmet market delicacies, and “mushroom log” inoculants, golden oysters frequently end up outdoors—whether tossed in the yard after harvesting, used to inoculate backyard stumps, or accidentally released with spent substrate. From there, spores travel on wind and animals, allowing the species to leapfrog across landscapes.

Fungal invasions have long flown under the radar. While invasive plants, insects, and vertebrates trigger rapid response teams and public campaigns, introduced fungi often spread unnoticed until ecosystems are already altered.

The southward march of the golden oyster is a vivid reminder that even edible, attractive species can become disruptive when moved beyond their native range. Protecting forests now means treating fungal biodiversity with the same urgency we give trees, birds, and bees.
