Total fuel costs for scheduled service on US airlines jumped +$1.83 billion MoM in March, or +56%, to a record $5.06 billion.
This also marks a +$1.16 billion YoY increase, or +30%.
As a result, major carriers, including Delta, have already withdrawn or significantly reduced their 2026 financial guidance, with some scaling back growth plans to avoid operating unprofitable routes at elevated fuel prices.
Furthermore, several major carriers now expect customers to absorb higher jet fuel costs by the end of 2026 or early 2027.
However, consumers were still traveling in March, with travel agency ticket sales rising +12% YoY, to $10.4 billion, suggesting demand has not yet been significantly destroyed.
Airfare inflation is likely just getting started.
