Scientists in Iceland are preparing to drill more than two kilometers directly into a molten magma chamber beneath a volcano.

The Krafla Magma Testbed (KMT) project represents a historic scientific endeavor. Building on an accidental discovery in 2009, when drillers unexpectedly struck molten rock at a depth of 2,100 meters, an international team now plans to deliberately bore into the heart of the Krafla volcano.

By placing sensors and instruments inside the approximately 1,000°C (1,832°F) magma, researchers aim to gain unprecedented insights into volcanic processes. The goal is to move beyond surface observations and develop far more accurate methods for forecasting eruptions, potentially saving lives through better prediction of volcanic activity.

The project also promises a major breakthrough in renewable energy. Using advanced heat-resistant materials capable of withstanding extreme temperatures and corrosive gases, the team hopes to tap into “supercritical” steam generated at the edge of the magma chamber. This approach could generate up to ten times more electricity than conventional geothermal wells, offering a powerful new source of clean, high-efficiency energy.

Although the technical challenges of operating in such an extreme environment are formidable, the potential rewards are immense: a deeper understanding of Earth’s volcanic forces combined with a revolutionary step toward sustainable, near-limitless geothermal power.
