On April 9, a Tulare County Sheriff's deputy (a detective) was killed in an ambush shooting in Porterville, California, while serving an eviction notice near Newcomb Street and Grand Avenue at 10:20 a.m.
The deputy (35-year-old Randy Hoppert) was struck during the shooting, rushed from the scene, and later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The suspect, 59-year-old David Morales, barricaded himself inside a residence with a high-powered rifle after 35 days of unpaid rent. Morales was found prone and firing at armored vehicles. The officers made the decision to run over the suspect, killing him.
