Published in Communications Medicine on January 21, 2026, the research analyzed detailed health registry data from nearly 60,000 women aged 18–45 in Sweden's Jönköping County (a region representative of the national population). Researchers compared pregnancy and birth outcomes between vaccinated (about 75% received at least one dose between 2021 and 2024) and unvaccinated groups, tracking childbirths, recorded miscarriages, and other key events over time.

After adjusting for potential confounders, the results were clear: there were no statistically significant differences in childbirth rates (adjusted hazard ratio ≈1.03) or miscarriage rates (adjusted hazard ratio ≈0.86) between the two groups. These findings held across different assumptions about pregnancy length and align with prior international evidence debunking early pandemic rumors about impacts on placental health or conception ability.

Senior author Professor Toomas Timpka emphasized that it is "highly unlikely" the mRNA vaccines contributed to any observed fluctuations in global birth rates during the pandemic, reinforcing that vaccination remains a safe option for those planning families or currently pregnant.
