A quick-witted 16-year-old angler helped rescue an endangered smalltooth sawfish that had been trapped in a shallow Florida pond for months.

While fishing in Bishop Harbor Pond near Palmetto, Florida, Kane Mcree hooked a rare 7.4-foot smalltooth sawfish—not just once, but twice within a week. What might thrill most fishermen as a lucky repeat catch raised red flags for the observant teenager: the fish couldn't escape the enclosed wetland due to metal grates over the culverts.

He suspected the sawfish had entered during flooding from Hurricane Helene (likely in late 2024) and then became stranded as waters receded. Rather than ignore it, Mcree contacted the U.S. Sawfish Recovery Team (using a hotline number he'd seen on a keychain).

The rescue proved challenging and unfolded over nearly three months, requiring multiple attempts. Experts from Havenworth Coastal Conservation, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), NOAA Fisheries, and volunteers deployed drones and underwater cameras to locate the elusive predator in the sizable pond.

An eight-person team finally captured the female sawfish using a bottom longline, measured her at 7.4 feet, collected biological samples for research, attached an acoustic tracking transmitter, and carefully transported her in a specialized water-filled stretcher across a road to release her into open waters of Tampa Bay.

This effort underscores the precarious state of smalltooth sawfish—critically endangered due to historical overfishing, habitat degradation, and emerging threats like mysterious "spinning" behavior—while showing how one alert individual's quick action can make a real difference in conservation.
