The US housing market has shifted into one of the strongest buyer's markets on record:
Home sellers outnumbered buyers by 47.1% in December 2025, the largest gap since Redfin data began in 2013.
The percentage jumped by +7.1 points from November, the biggest monthly increase since September 2022.
The number of active homebuyers fell -5.9% MoM to 1.34 million, the lowest level on record.
Meanwhile, home sellers declined -1.1% MoM to 1.97 million, the lowest since February 2025.
By comparison, in November 2021, there were 36.5% fewer sellers than buyers.
This all comes as elevated housing costs and economic uncertainty continue to push buyers to the sidelines.
Buyers now hold unprecedented negotiating power, but only if they can afford to enter the market.

During the operation, an individual approached U.S. Border Patrol officers with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun. The officers attempted to disarm the suspect but the armed suspect violently resisted. Fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers, an agent fired defensive shots.

NEW: Trapped cruise ship rescued from thick ice near Antarctica by the United States Coast Guard.
The Scenic Eclipse II, which can hold 228 passengers and 176 crew members, was traveling through the Ross Sea when it got stuck.
The USCGC Polar Star was seen breaking the ice to create a path for the cruise ship to pass through.
"The Australian-owned cruise ship Scenic Eclipse II contacted Polar Star at approximately 11 p.m., local time Friday after becoming beset in pack ice roughly eight nautical miles from McMurdo Sound," the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement.
"Polar Star’s crew conducted two close passes to break the vessel free, then escorted it approximately four nautical miles to open water."
