When a single company controls your entire digital life (account, backups, communications)β¦ it can all be taken away from you in an instant.
And, for most people, thereβs nothing you can do about it.
Consider this a cautionary tale.
βMy Apple ID, which I have held for around 25 years, has been permanently disabled. This isnβt just an email address; it is my core digital identity. It holds terabytes of family photos, my entire message history, and is the key to syncing my work across the ecosystem.β

Is a US power crisis unfolding?
Power demand is expected to exceed available electric generation at peak moments by 2028.
Peak demand is projected to reach 1,160 gigawatts, above the 1,158 gigawatts of anticipated supply.
By 2033, the power capacity shortfall could widen to as much as 175 gigawatts, a level that materially threatens grid stability.
This would stem from peak demand rising to 1,229 gigawatts, while anticipated peak supply declines to 1,128 gigawatts.
The US is facing a surge in electricity use from AI data centers, factories, and EVs that is expected to overwhelm generation capacity and drain emergency reserves, sharply increasing the risk of outages and blackouts.
We need more power.

In the early 2000βs Apple had the βdigital lifeβ thing figured out.
Users, the Apple of 2001 thought, should have total control over their data.
Your PC (Mac, in this case) was the hub. You would sync everything to your local Mac.
Photos, movies, music, PDA data,
β¦ everything synced to your Mac.
That data could then be easily backed up onto multiple mediums, including CD-RW drives, which were shipping with a growing number of Macs.
Apple even encouraged you to βRip Mix Burnβ your music collection.
Local backup and total, personal control over your own data. That was the Apple vision of 2001.
Flash forward to 2025.
All data is now stored in the cloud. Full functionality of your computing device is tied to online accounts managed by companies like Apple.
Local backups and βsyncingβ is discouraged and made difficult.
Your βdigital lifeβ is no longer your own, and can be taken away in a flash.
The Apple of 2001 would hate the Apple of 2025.
