He argued that liberalism dissolves every organic bond, reduces culture to commerce, and replaces historical destiny with a managerial conception of politics. Yet “Imperium” transcends both the immediate post-war situation and its initial readership. It opened pathways toward a deconstruction of liberalism long before such critiques became academically fashionable, and it introduced the concept of cultural vitalism, the organic understanding of culture as a living force that impresses its character upon every domain it touches. These contributions are even more relevant now than in their own day and provide deeper insight into the situation of the West in the present century, where the crisis of culture has intensified and shows signs of entering a terminal phase.
