Our Times • Directed by Rakhshan Banietemad • 2001 • Iran

While the first half of Rakhshan Banietemad’s Our Times centers on the people, mostly youths, involved in Iran’s 2001 presidential election, the second half of the film focuses on Arezu Bayat, a twice-divorced single mother who decides to run for president. In this provocative documentary, Arezu boldly challenges the norms set by her society and strives to create a life for herself and her family under the patriarchy. Despite a continuous string of trials, Arezu continues to rebel against gender inequality.
Banietemad takes images that have historically been associated with womanhood — such as folding clothes, making the bed, and preparing food -- and replaces them with the image of a woman who fights for freedom, gender equality, and women empowerment. Arezu becomes the real driving force of the film, and with her fiercely determined character she subverts and complicates the socially constructed definition of women.

The Story of Gordafarid • Directed by Hadi Afarideh • Iran

Naqali is a traditional form of storytelling in which a man tells epic stories about the kings and warriors of Iran. This art has long been forbidden to women. The Story of Gordafarid follows Fateme Habibi-Zade, a woman pioneer in Naqali who goes against the status quo to become the first female naqal. The role she narrates is that of Gordafarid (which becomes her nickname), a very wise and intelligent woman in the Shahnameh (The Book of Kings) whose keen reasoning overrules her emotions. This documentary paints a powerful picture of a woman whose audacious character leaves a lasting impression on every viewer. She triumphed in a male-dominated arena and proved that the gender binary leads to nothing but discrimination.

Plane Grove • Directed by Hadi Afarideh • Iran

This documentary tells the story of 17-kilometer long Vali Asr Street, which connects Railway Square in the south of Tehran to the cold and mountainous region of Tajrish Square in the north. The film is narrated by Nava Tavakkolimehr, an architect and urban planner. Tavakkolimehr travels through the city, from Azeri Teahouse in the south up to the north, interviewing people. She aims to investigate how the collective memory constructs urban spaces. Individuals like Morteza Ahmadi, an actor and singer of Tehrani folkloric songs; Houri E’tesam, a long-time resident of the Amiriyeh District; and others narrate their own memories of Vali Asr Street and its surrounding neighborhoods, making use of collective memories as well. In this arrestingly structured documentary, Afarideh paints a haunting picture of Vali Asr Street that leaves a lasting impact on viewers.

Qelich • Directed by Pouria Nouri • 2021 • Iran

This documentary centers on the life of Vahid Qelich, a former goalkeeper for Iran’s national football team and coach of the Persepolis Football Club. Though the majority of the film is an intimate interview with Qelich, this documentary may also be seen as a textured "memory piece" in which viewers rewatch Qelich’s time as a goalkeeper and his coaching years, during which time he was known for his sarcastic strictness. Eventually, Qelich was pushed out of football and lost his fame. After years of isolation, dejection, and poverty he regained his popularity, this time not through football but instead in the virtual world, posting Instagram videos and humorous clips about everyday topics.

Aqueduct, the Story of Water • Directed by Hadi Afarideh • 2021 • Iran

This short documentary focuses on the aqueducts that were developed and later improved by Iranians in the arid regions of Persia. The film shows the importance of using aqueducts to carry fresh water over several kilometers, allowing farmers to survive long-lasting droughts. The film is filled with images of tranquil nature such as beautiful and peaceful meadows and flowing rivers. Although live aqueducts in Iran were registered as cultural heritage sites by UNESCO, sadly one thousand aqueducts go dry every year.

Baluchi Garden • Directed by Hadi Afarideh • 2021 • Iran

Centering on Sistan and Baluchistan Province in southeastern Iran, where most people are farmers, 68% of the villages lack tap water. Due to the drought, there are no available jobs or sources of income, so most of the villagers have been forced to migrate to other towns, leaving the villages vacant and devoid of life. Despite the drought and lack of people, each frame is mesmerizing, capturing the spectacular landscapes and the animals wandering through meadows and up and down dirt roads. This documentary’s piercing potency is eye-opening and calls attention to drought and its ramifications.
