Snowy Roads • Directed by Hayedeh Moradi • 2018 • Iran
Set in the Ardabil province in Iran, Snowy Roads explores what it means to be a teenage girl in an environment where girls are not allowed to continue their education due to financial hardship and their villages’ traditional beliefs. In these villages, most girls are forced to drop out when they finish primary school, whereas boys are encouraged to finish high school and attend university. In one particular scene of the film, when the director asks the men of these villages why they disapprove of girls receiving an education, they mainly refer to morals and traditions.
Snowy Roads portrays the hardship faced by girls who are surrounded not only by deep snow and steep mountains but also by the patriarchal beliefs that have effectively destroyed their future. But despite being imprisoned within the four walls of their houses, forced to learn domestic chores such as weaving carpets, knitting, and tailoring, they still dare to dream big and hope for a brighter future.

Our Home • Directed by Sam Soleimani & Iman Hamidi • 2020 • Iran
A tense and compelling look at Hossein Movafagh’s two sons, Our Home captures the solitude and misery experienced by these brothers. Their father was a popular singer whose life transformed after the Revolution of 1979. After moving to the Netherlands with his new wife, his two adult sons remained in Iran, living in a big, isolated house without any amenities.
The documentary features rich and heart-rending images of the dilapidated house, which is filled with debris, rickety furniture, stray cats, and two emaciated, abandoned, and drug-addicted young men. The last scene leaves a lasting imprint on audiences’ minds: the filmmaker returns to the house and finds that bricks are blocking the door and windows, but the peak of the drama comes when the audience realizes that no one knows what happened to the two brothers.

Double Feature: Fatherland
Harat • Directed by Sepideh Farsi • 2007 • Iran & Afghanistan &
Following the director’s journey from Paris to Harat, Afghanistan, Sepideh Farsi’s documentary is a meaningful look at her time traveling with her daughter and father to see their family. Stopping in Baku, Tehran, Mashhad, and Ardameh before eventually reaching Harat, the group meets with various members of their family who reveal family stories and, through them, examples of their own unique cultures and customs. By weaving together stories about her father and his relatives with glimpses of beautiful cities, Harat tells a simple, linear story illustrated with the unique identities of different cities. Imbued with warmth and humanity, Sepideh Farsi’s observational examination in this personal travelog is unassumingly absorbing and portrays realistic, unfailingly human personalities. By mainly focusing on her daughter and how she perceives the world, this unobtrusively patient documentary paints the portrait of a family using stories gathered from different cities. It is a testament to the ordinary life, and through Farsi's simple yet exquisite film one can see glimpses of a better world.

Double Feature: Fatherland
7 Veils (1) • Directed by Sepideh Farsi • 2017 • Afghanistan
Sepideh Farsi’s 7 Veils is set in the culturally rich Afghanistan, a country that has been plagued by war and strife for many decades. In this film, Farsi takes a look at the ordinary people whose way of life remains difficult to understand for those living outside the country. Farsi’s goal is to lift up the veil that obscures the country’s true, compassionate heart, using images that are beautiful, aesthetically impressive, and transcendental.
From the experiences of a French ambassador; to the hardship of a political activist who has not been permitted to leave the country since 2013; to the words of a politician who discusses the role of the communist revolution in Afghanistan and its aftermath; to the American checkpoints in the city and the ongoing presence of soldiers, tanks, and helicopters; to the conversations with workers, veterans, taxi drivers, and the women who long for independence, this documentary is an unraveling, dizzying, and spectacular look at life in Afghanistan. It is a humane portrait of a country that longs to catch its breath amidst the lingering war.
