Of Kings and Paintings (1) • Directed by Sara Nodjoumi • 2019 • USA

Of Kings and Paintings delves into the history of Iran’s art during the Qajar Dynasty (1785-1925). It is a fascinating exploration of the shift from more traditional Iranian styles of painting to the use of modern techniques and elements borrowed from European painting. It also studies the effect of the development of photography on the country’s art. From the works of painter Sanee-ol-molk to those of Kamal-ol-molk, this documentary closely analyzes a hybrid style of painting that borders on the erotic and features the use of lavish materials, flamboyant gestures, beautiful physiognomies, and much attention to detail. The film incorporates interviews by historians such as Abbas Amanat, Maryam Ekhtiar, and Layla S. Diba, who speak on everything from glorious portraits of kings to more religious works known as ghahve khane paintings. Sara Nodjoumi masterfully weaves together art history and Persian history.

No Place for Angels • Directed by Sam Kalantari • 2020 • Iran

No Place for Angels follows the Iranian women’s national hockey team as they practice and prepare to compete in the Asian Games. While much of the film explores the athletes’ personal lives and the problems they face as women, it also delves deeply into their defiant enthusiasm for hockey and their passion to emerge victorious in the competition. This documentary provides an outstanding example of strong, highly competent women who seek to break through restrictive societal norms.
The climax of the film comes when a professional psychologist joins the team, introducing new methods and beliefs to the women and encouraging them to try their best. This eloquent and graceful documentary is a mélange of many feelings, including restlessness, passion, anger, displacement, defeat, shame, and victory. The scenes of their matches, which feature fast-paced cutting and hand-held camerawork, are extremely breathtaking and captivating. As a whole, the film shows the importance of believing in oneself and accepting that we are all capable of more than we ever thought possible.
