VHS Diaries • Directed by Niyaz Saghari • 2020
⠀
During the period when video was banned in Iran, Niyaz Saghari preserved her defiant enthusiasm for cinema by collating diaries. By incorporating her personal VHS film archive, hand-written diaries, and interviews with avid cinephiles and underground video dealers into her film, she passionately, and with exquisite nuance, frames the love for cinema as a compromising reality.
Saghari’s film is an homage to the history of cinema, foreign film distribution in Iran during the 80’s, and an entire generation’s immense fondness of cinema, which they used to break free from the restrictions of the time. Despite being a relatively simple story, it is exquisitely told. Saghari captures haunting, nostalgic moments and intensely emotional experiences that will surely remain in any viewer’s mind for a very long time.

A Little Stiff • Directed by Caveh Zahedi • 1991 • USA
A Little Stiff is a minimalist comedy based on true events and re-enacted by the actual participants. Caveh Zahedi plays himself as a neurotic film student who develops a crush on art student Erin McKim after a brief encounter in an elevator. Great movie!

Amour du Réel • Directed by Iman Behrouzi • 2017 • Iran
After working abroad for several years, a filmmaker returns to his family home in Shiraz, Iran to make a film for the woman he loves. His exploration of his feelings and of the cross-cultural and geographical barriers to pursuing this relationship eventually spark introspections among members of his family, as they express their emotions to one another in new ways in front of the camera. A documentary about cross-generational understandings of love and emotion set in current day Iran.

The Rock • Directed by Hamid Jafari • 2015 • Iran
Swathed from head to toe in black, a woman is breaking stones out of a rock wall using a crowbar and her bare hands. For several minutes we watch her prying, pushing, bashing, awkwardly wrestling in her flapping robes, until the block she is after finally comes crashing down, right next to the lens of the low camera and her bare feet. Stone by stone, the blocks are loaded onto a truck, and the driver gives her some money – she has earned her wage. In a stone cave dwelling they built themselves, she tends to her elderly husband before returning the next day to the never-ending work. Her daily routine resembles the torment of Sisyphus – a dusty chore she is doomed to repeat forever. The stony, reddish moonlike landscape of southern Iran and the traditional way of life lend an almost biblical atmosphere to this serene, aesthetically filmed visual poem.

Like the arid, unending landscape, the woman’s existence seems to lack any dynamism, gradually raising questions about the meaning of life.

ROSVAA and Docunight Present: رقص ناتمام The Never Ending Dance
The Never Ending Dance is the second instalment of three film collections curated with ROSVAA magazine centering women's stories.
The collection explores the challenges of marginalized female artists in the societies in which they live and work.
Shahrzaad’s Tale • Directed by Shahin Parhami • 2015 • Iran/Canada/Korea)
Nessa • Directed by Loghman Khaledi • 2021 • Iran
Both documentaries present resilient, independent women whose situations may be viewed as opposites: Shahrzaad's battle is seen through the trajectory of her life, from once being a famous figure to having nothing, while, conversely, Nessa's battle is an attempt to rise from nothing to become an artist.

Shahrzaad’s Tale • Directed by Shahin Parhami • 2015 • Iran/Canada/Korea)
Shahrzaad’s Tale is a documentary that subtly explores the tragic and miserable life of Shahrzaad (pseudonym of Kobra Sa'idi), an actress, poet, and film director who played a pioneering role in Iranian cinema before the Revolution of 1979. Having lost the comforts of her former life, she now lives in a dilapidated house in a remote village. However, the former actress never appears hopeless or weak in front of Parhami’s camera. The parallel editing of shots of modern-day Tehran with film footage from the 60’s showcasing Shahrzaad as an actress and dancer clearly illustrates Parhami’s sharp sense of style and storytelling.

Parhami incorporates interviews with young woman artists and the legendary Iranian actors Pouri Banaie and Bahman Mofid, who once acted alongside Shahzaad. Her connection with and fondness for them are palpable and enhance the key moments of love and grief in the film.
