Dr Donbass: Living on the edge / 2022
#Donbass #Ukraine

โ€˜Did you see the guy with his guts spilling out? The wounded one who was carried in just now? The intelligence guys were on their way to perform a mission. But, unfortunately, the enemy opened up mortar fire, and the guy was unlucky,โ€™ says a Russian serviceman about his comrade.

A piece of shrapnel ripped open his stomach. But heโ€™ll be OK. The doctors here fight for life every day. They removed the damaged tissues, and the patient will be evacuated for further medical treatment and rehabilitation later. So this story will have a happy ending.

This is just one of the cases Donbass doctors see on the job as they have to attend to service members and civilians injured by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. They have to work practically on the frontline, in destroyed buildings, and with limited resources. Yet, they find the strength to carry on. Watch Dr Donbass: Living on the Edge to learn more about them.

Ready, Steady, Goat! / 2015
#Kyrgyzstan

Kok Boru is more popular than football in Kyrgyzstan. This ancient sport played by nomads is similar to polo, except teams play with a decapitated goat instead of a ball. Teams of ten men on horseback compete for control of its body and score by placing it in the opponentsโ€™ goal - a large concrete kazan, or pot.

Kok Boru is quite a sight that draws large crowds. This traditional sport is undergoing a revival and can be seen in Central Asian countries. In Afghanistan, itโ€™s called Buzkashi. Some say it gets too violent and brutal. But you decide for yourself.

โ€˜Dark, barbaric and savageโ€™ is how rulers and philosophers in the West have portrayed Russia throughout history. The image lives on and flourishes in the media and popular culture.

The documentary traces the origins of the anti-Russian narrative and explores who benefits from the idea of an โ€˜irrational and dangerous nationโ€™. It also takes a look at how the anti-Russian sentiment spread across Europe.

Researchers, historians and writers talk about the shaping of Western disdain for Russia from the Great Schism to contemporary anti-Russia hysteria.

Madman of the Cathedral / 2016
#Spain

Former Spanish monk, Justo Gallego Martinez, spent 60 years building his own cathedral. But, according to Don Justo, he had no blueprint or even drawings in mind. Instead, he was relying on proportions and intuition.

Some considered Don Justo a saint; others say he was crazy. He started the construction after tuberculosis forced him to leave a Trappist order. The former monk devoted almost all his life and most of his family inheritance to the cathedral.

Don Justoโ€™s cathedral wasnโ€™t completed during his lifetime. He died at the age of 96 in 2021.

Reaping Divine Justice / 2019
#SouthAfrica

Every year, on July 18, Mandela Day celebrates and commemorate the legacy of South Africa's first Black president. Nelson Mandela brought an end to the segregationist policies of the countryโ€™s apartheid system.

Unfortunately, racial disparities in income, jobs and land ownership remain. White South Africans, who make up just 8 percent of the population, still own 72% of all rural land.

In 2019, the ruling African National Congress wanted to redress historical injustices through land reform. Their plans, however, sparked heated debate and wave of violence against white-owned farms.

Dr Donbass: Behind the Frontline / 2022
#Donbass

'Hereโ€™s our dressing station. This is the projectileโ€™s landing spot. You can see itโ€™s very close. So the distance is small, about 10-15 meters. Almost all hospital windows are broken. All the right wing. Fortunately, there were no casualties. Everything here happens with such rumblings,' says Ivan, a 25-year-old surgeon from Donbass. He came as a member of a group to provide medical assistance to the wounded and injured in action. He decided to become a surgeon in his 3rd year of medical school; this job was his chance to test his skills.

'The deaths that weโ€™ve faced, that I faced myself, the guys died becauseโ€ฆfor different reasons. You realise that if we had one more hour, he would have been [alive]โ€ฆ And right now, because it happened that way, heโ€™s gone. Life is a very fragile thing,' says Ivan.
