Uncertainty in Madrid as Court Nixes Partial Virus Lockdown

🇪🇸 A court in Madrid has struck down a national government order that imposed a partial lockdown in the Spanish capital and its suburbs, siding with regional officials who had resisted stricter measures against one of Europe's most worrying virus clusters.

The judges say that travel restrictions in and out of the cities and other limitations might be necessary to fight the spread of the virus but that under the current legal form they were violating residents’ fundamental rights and freedoms.

Thursday's decision means that police wont be able to fine people for leaving their municipalities or businesses that want to close later than 10 p.m. for shops and 11 p.m. for restaurants and bars. AI Cameras Introduced in London to Monitor Social Distancing and Lockdown Restrictions

🇬🇧 Artificial Intelligence cameras are being used in London and other cities in the UK to monitor social distancing.

The sensors were initially developed by Vivacity to track the flow of traffic, cyclists and pedestrians and monitor how roads are being used.

But when the country went into lockdown in March, Vivacity added on an extra feature to the AI scanners so it could register the distance between pedestrians. This data is shared in a monthly report with the Government.

U.S. Department of Defense Viral Spread Test on Commercial Planes Reveals Good News, General Claims

📝 The head of U.S. Transportation Command offered a sneak preview Wednesday of the results of a Defense Department test of particulate spread on commercial aircraft—and they are surprising.

Speaking at the National Defense Transportation Association's annual fall meeting, Gen. Stephen Lyons cited an aerosol test held Aug. 24-31 aboard two large passenger aircraft: the Boeing 767-300 and 777-200. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, better known as DARPA, teamed up with biodefense company Zeteo Tech Inc. to evaluate in-flight spread of airborne particles. Industry partners included Boeing and United Airlines.

"[The test] was an initiative initiated by TRANSCOM and supported by the Air Force and the test community to determine whether it's safe to fly on commercial airliners," Lyons said Wednesday. "And I have to tell you, their results, as were the results when we looked at this from the COVID patient movement challenge, are very, very encouraging."

SARS-CoV-2 Can Survive on Banknotes, Phone Screens for Up to Four Weeks, Study Finds

📝 The new coronavirus may remain infectious for weeks on banknotes, glass and other common surfaces, according to research by Australia’s top biosecurity laboratory that highlights risks from paper currency, touch screen devices and grab handles and rails.

Scientists at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness showed SARS-CoV-2 is “extremely robust,” surviving for 28 days on smooth surfaces such as glass found on mobile phone screens and plastic banknotes at room temperature, or 20 degrees Celsius. That compares with 17 days survival for the flu virus.

Virus survival declined to less than a day at 40 degrees on some surfaces, according to the study, published on Monday in Virology Journal.
