Americans' "Vaccine Hesitancy" Could be a Barrier to Defeating COVID-19, Doctor Warns

Achieving herd immunity to COVID-19 is a goal medical experts hope to meet with the eventual rollout of a coronavirus vaccine. CDC Director Robert Redfield testified before Congress Wednesday that even if a vaccine is approved and ready to start distributing in November, it would likely take until the middle of 2021 for it to be "generally available to the American public so we can begin to take advantage of vaccine to get back to our regular life."

But lack of trust in the process and the persistence of anti-vaccine beliefs in U.S. society could be a barrier to defeating the virus.

"I am quite concerned, given the vaccine hesitancy of many Americans, that it's going to be challenging to get to that point," internal medicine specialist Dr. Shoshana Ungerleider told CBSN on Thursday. "So, all the more reason we need to be reliant on the science."

According to Johns Hopkins University, 70% to 90% of Americans would need to have coronavirus antibodies for herd immunity to be achieved. Herd immunity helps protect vulnerable people like infants and those with compromised immune systems who can't get the vaccine.

However, vaccine opponents had already begun efforts to disparage the future vaccine as early as April, months before any clinical trials.

U.S. Cases of Depression Have Tripled During the COVID-19 Pandemic

The number of adults experiencing depression in the U.S. has tripled during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a major study. Researchers estimate that more than 1 in 4 U.S. adults now report experiencing symptoms of depression.

Before the pandemic, 8.5% of U.S. adults reported being depressed. That number has risen to 27.8% as the country struggles with COVID-19.

The mayor of Moche, Peru, has come out in the public and announced that the pandemic is officially over! He declares that the government response is anti-human and anti-life, and is a campaign of outright terrorism. During his speech, the police comes to harass him, but the mayor keeps going, declaring that their district is NOT adhering to the dictatorship any longer.

Now that is a man with a moral spine! I pray we will see more and more of this in the coming days. Truth will prevail!

UK to Crack Down on COVID-19 Rule Breakers With Fines Up to 10,000 Pounds

🇬🇧 People in England who break new rules requiring them to self-isolate if they have been in contact with someone infected with COVID-19 will face a fine of up to 10,000 pounds ($12,914), Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Saturday.

The rules will apply from Sept. 28 to anyone in England who tests positive for the virus or is notified by public health workers that they have been in contact with someone infectious.

“People who choose to ignore the rules will face significant fines,” Johnson said in a statement.

Fines will start at 1,000 pounds for a first offence, rising to 10,000 pounds for repeat offenders or cases where employers threaten to sack staff who self-isolate rather than go to work.

To date there has been little enforcement of self-isolation rules, except in some cases where people have returned from abroad.

Johnson has also faced calls to reintroduce more wide-ranging lockdown rules for the general public. @COVID19Up SOURCE

Almost 90% of New York City Bars and Restaurant Owners Couldn’t Pay Rent Last Month

Nearly 90% of New York City bar and restaurant owners couldn’t pay their rent in August, heightening the continued crush the coronavirus shutdown has inflicted on Gotham’s economy.

Eighty-seven percent of bars, restaurants, nightclubs and event spaces in the five boroughs could not pay their full August rent, according to data from 457 businesses surveyed between Aug. 25 and Sept. 11, in a new study released Monday by the nonprofit NYC Hospitality Alliance.

It’s a 7 percentage-point increase from June and a four-point jump from July, darkening the dire picture for eateries desperately seeking relief following six months of partial—and in some cases total—closure due to COVID-19 shutdowns.

Some 34% of this group said they could not pay rent at all last month, and only 12.9% were able to meet full payments.

“Restaurants, bars and nightlife venues have been financially devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said alliance executive director Andrew Rigie.

Fauci Aide Unmasked as COVID Troll Decides to Retire

🇺🇸 Bill Crews, a public affairs aide at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, plans to retire after The Daily Beast reported on extensive derogatory comments he made towards the agency and its director, Dr. Anthony Fauci, in his post as an editor of the popular conservative website RedState.

“NIAID first learned of this matter this morning, and Mr. Crews has informed us of his intention to retire,” a spokesperson for the agency said in an emailed statement. “We have no further comments on this as it is a personnel matter.”

As The Daily Beast reported on Monday, Crews, the managing editor of RedState, has written for the site since 2004 under the pseudonym “Streiff.” Since the spring, his writings have included angry denunciations of Fauci and other public health leaders over efforts to combat the coronavirus that Crews has portrayed as an anti-Trump conspiracy.

“If there were justice, we’d send and [sic] few dozen of these fascists to the gallows and gibbet their tarred bodies in chains until they fall apart,” he wrote in June of officials leading the nation’s COVID mitigation strategies. @COVID19Up SOURCE
